Pancake Breakfast

  • Date: 06/02/2024 10:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Celebrate Newton’s 150th birthday as a city with Mayor Ruthanne Fuller, Chief Greg Gentile and Newton Fire Department at a free community pancake breakfast!

When:  Sunday June 2, 2024, 10am – 12pm

Where:  Newton Fire Headquarters

            1164 Centre Street, Newton Centre

Why: This year, we celebrate Newton’s 150 years as a city. Of course, Newton had a long history before 1874: The city sits on land of the country’s Native people, who have lived (and still live) in this region for more than 12,000 years. The first English colonists settled here in the 1630s, and in 1691, the town’s official name became Newton. But by 1873, the town had become too large for direct democracy.  Newton voters vociferously debated whether to adopt a city charter and establish representative government or pursue annexation to Boston. In a special election in 1873, Newtonians approved the change to city government by a three-to-one majority. The new City of Newton inaugurated its first mayor, J. F. C. Hyde, on January 5, 1874—150 years ago.

What:  There will be family friendly activities for all ages to enjoy including visiting the Newton Fire Museum, taking a selfie with Paw Patrol, climbing a firetruck, testing your skills with a firehose, and enjoying free pancakes (while supplies last so come early)!

Who:  Hosted by the Chief Greg Gentile and the Newton Fire Department in partnership with Newton Firefighters Association Local 863 and the City of Newton.
