Applications for Building Permits

Residential Building Permits

  • Required documents to accompany an application for a residential building permit shall include the following:
    • A description of the work to be covered by the permit for which the application is made
    • Floor plans detailing the locations of all required fire protection systems, including smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, fire sprinklers (if required).

Commercial Building Permits

  • Required documents to accompany an application for a commercial building permit shall include the following:
    • Narrative report:
      1. Basis (methodology) of design for the protection of the occupancy and hazards for compliance with 780 CMR and applicable NFPA standards, in the form of a narrative report.
      2. Sequence of operation of all fire protection systems and operation in the form of a narrative report.
      3. Testing criteria to be used for final system acceptance in the form of a narrative report
    • Dedicated plans that indicate the use of all rooms and document the location of all fire alarm equipment and devices in accordance with NFPA 72. The sequences of operation shall appear on the fire alarm plans as well as the narrative report.
    • Fire alarm equipment and device symbol legend.
    • Primary Power Connection.
    • Details of ceiling height and construction.
    • The interface of fire safety control functions
    • The location of any equipment or devices that directly interface with the fire alarm system.
    • Fire alarm system riser diagram.

Fire Protection Construction Documents

  • The following documents must be submitted prior to the installation of any protection equipment in order to be approved:
    • Basis (methodology) of design for the protection of the occupancy and hazards for compliance with 780 CMR and applicable NFPA Standards, in the form of a narrative report.
      1. Sequence of operation of all fire protection systems and operation in the form of a narrative report.
      2. Testing criteria to be used for final system acceptance in the form of a narrative report.
      3. Building and site access for fire fighting and/or rescue vehicle(s) and personnel.
      4. Fire hydrant(s) location and water supply information.
    • Type/description and design layout of the automatic sprinkler system(s).
    • Automatic sprinkler system(s) control equipment location.
    • Type/description and design layout of the automatic standpipe system(s).
    • Standpipe system hose valve(s) type and location.
    • Fire department siamese connection type(s) and location.
    • Type/description and design layout of the fire protective signaling system(s).
    • Fire protective signaling system(s) control equipment and remote annunciator location.
    • Type/description and design layout of the smoke control or exhaust system(s).
    • Smoke control or exhaust system(s) control equipment location.
    • Building life safety system features (auxiliary functions) required to be integrated as part of the fire protective signaling system(s).
    • Type/description and design layout of the fire extinguishing system(s).
    • Fire extinguishing system(s) control equipment location.
    • Fire protection system(s) equipment room location.
    • Fire protection system(s) equipment identification and operation signs.
    • Fire protection system(s) alarm/ supervisory signal transmission method and location.
    • Fire command center location.
    • Type/description and location of any emergency alarm system.
    • Type/description and location of any carbon monoxide protection.

Fire protection system plans

  • All fire protection system plans shall contain sufficient information to identify the occupancy, hazards, system and equipment arrangements, system and equipment sizing, systems specifications, systems sequence(s) of operation and design/engineering calculations.

Construction Documents Required Prior to the Installation of Fire Alarm Equipment or Devices

  • Required documents shall include:
    • Manufacturers, models numbers and listing information for equipment, devices and materials.
    • Circuitry layout, conductor types and sizes.
    • Voltage drop calculations 4. Battery calculations
