Mayor Theodore Mann publicity photoTheodore D. Mann (1922-1994), Newton's longest serving mayor, died in office in 1994.

Throughout his long career, Mann served the city and the state in many ways. He was an alderman from 1958 to 1965 and a State Representative from 1965 to 1972. As Newton's mayor from 1972 to 1994, he played an important role in local, state and national organizations relating to municipal management.

Collections held by the Newton City Archives, the Newton Free Library, and the Newton History Museum provide an important source of information about Mayor Mann and the City of Newton over two decades.

The Office Papers of Theodore D. Mann have been catalogued and are housed in the City Archives. These papers pertain to city departments and the business of the city. Contact the Newton City Archivist for information.

Memorabilia, including a 1995 photograph album and newspaper clipping dated 1972 to 1994 are kept in the Newton Free Library. The clippings, which have been copied and bound, provide a record of Mayor Mann's administration and his family.

The Archives at Historic Newton holds a substantial photograph and slide collection as well as copies of a memorial booklet, which provides a list of accomplishments and tributes. The photographs relate to the city activities under Mayor Mann, and his successor, Thomas B. Concannon. The slide collection of over 1000 images taken between 1981 and 1994 pertains to only to Mann's tenure.

In addition, the Archives holds a small group of Newton objects and ephemera collected by Mayor Mann. The photographs and slides are in the Mann Photograph Collection 1972-1989, the Zigo Photograph Collection 1981-1997, and the Zigo Slide Collection 1984-1993.
