12:37:29 From Cat Kemmett : [1] Which of the Zoning Redesign goals feel most important to you? And why? (Remember, we’re planning for the next 50 years and beyond!) For context, here are the 3 goals that the Zoning & Planning Committee straw-voted in: (a) Housing: A zoning code more responsive to a demand for housing that serves a range of incomes and promotes sustainable community development patterns (b) Sustainability: Environmental stewardship, fiscal strength and meeting community needs (c) Context: Preserve and protect what we like in our neighborhoods. Encourage new development to fit in the context of our neighborhoods and villages 12:39:43 From Michael Spurr : can you give an example of non-village center with public transportation ? 12:41:40 From Laurie Palepu to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : how do we raise hand? 12:42:17 From Michael Spurr : this was more to Miriam's comments... 12:42:19 From Cat Kemmett to Laurie Palepu(Privately) : Hi Laurie- -Click ‘Participants’ -> Click on the blue hand 12:42:22 From Laurie Palepu to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : never mind! 12:44:25 From Michael Spurr : more small housing units should increase the tax base, correct? 12:45:18 From Cat Kemmett : [2] What do you hope that Zoning Redesign accomplishes? 12:46:28 From Miriam Tuchman : my point is that non-village centers have just sa much access to public transportation- think about where the Green line goes. So focusing housing in City centers doesn't mean you have access to your job if you work in say, Cambridge but live in West Newton Square or Natick and live in Oak Hill. The commute is more than an hour. Also, my other point was that the vast majority of transportation is M-F, 9 AM - 5 PM and directed toward downtown. 12:47:19 From Miriam Tuchman : Lots of people and lots of people who need affordable housing DONT work 9-5, M-F in downtown 12:48:15 From Michael Spurr : OK, that makes sense to me. 12:48:22 From Cat Kemmett : [3] What concerns you about Zoning Redesign? 12:48:50 From Miriam Tuchman : Increasing the tax base isn't a one to one relationship with housing if more housing increases the need for infrastructure development which is very expensive- water, sewer, schools, fire, police 12:49:34 From Laurie Palepu to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : I already expressed my concerns in previous question 12:50:08 From Michael Spurr : is there a way to encourage builders to construct smaller homes? 12:51:17 From Michael Spurr : or build midsized buildings? 8-12 units? 12:54:11 From Sarah Rahman to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : I don’t seem to have the option to chat with everyone. Only with the co-hosts privately. So I will share with you and you are free to share with everyone. I think my big concern with zoning redesign is what the actual execution will look like? Will neighborhoods be overwhelmed with lots of residential redevelopment all at once? What will current residents bear to achieve the larger future vision? 12:56:13 From Kathleen Hobson to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : for some reason i have no way of sending a message to Everyone, just you and Susan 12:56:46 From Cat Kemmett to Kathleen Hobson(Privately) : I'm sorry about that Kathleen! I am not sure why 12:57:08 From Cat Kemmett to Kathleen Hobson(Privately) : But if you want to send your message to me, I can post it out to everyone 12:57:20 From Kathleen Hobson to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : ok. thanks. i’m all right for now. 12:57:35 From Cat Kemmett to Sarah Rahman(Privately) : Sorry Sarah! I can post it out to everyone if you would like? 12:58:23 From Michael Spurr : Jim has a great point and this could be included in the out reach to residents 12:58:59 From Sarah Rahman to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : Nope. Seems like a quirk with my session. 13:00:06 From kevin eagar : the everyone chat function works for me 13:01:09 From Cat Kemmett : - [4] How do you want to participate with Zoning Redesign in 2021? Here are some examples of how we can engage Newton community members: - large city-wide events with break-out groups - meetings by Ward or Village - meetings by individual topics - Office hours - short info sheets and videos by topic - Steward-based program (Newton community members sign up to be ‘Stewards,’ where they review material that staff creates for public education, such as flyers, educational pamphlets, or surveys and help engage Newton community members) - Surveys - facilitated debates 13:02:01 From Cat Kemmett : - presentations by outside community groups who have experienced zoning re-write in their cities - Social Media (Instagram, Facebook) 13:04:36 From Michael Spurr : if we look at the accessory apt. change, how many have taken advantage of this? 13:04:54 From Kathleen Hobson to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : Kathy Pillsbury did this research: How Many Single-Family Homes COULD + COULDN’T BE Converted into Multifamily Homes in Newton? https://e41e1075-3381-440d-9251-d60ce7113875.usrfiles.com/ugd/e41e10_fbf67945d59e45a9916db671e8fd8222.pdf 13:06:11 From Cat Kemmett : Sharing this resource from Kathleen: "Kathy Pillsbury did this research: How Many Single-Family Homes COULD + COULDN’T BE Converted into Multifamily Homes in Newton? https://e41e1075-3381-440d-9251-d60ce7113875.usrfiles.com/ugd/e41e10_fbf67945d59e45a9916db671e8fd8222.pdf" 13:07:04 From Sarah Rahman to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : I think it would be great to have virtual village meetings, specific to what impacts - residential, commercial, traffic, could be seen in the villaget 13:08:10 From Kathleen Hobson to Cat Kemmett(Privately) : https://www.buildingabetterbrookline.org/forum2-learning-from-successful-strategies 13:08:12 From Jim Purdy : To Miriam’s point about non-residential buildings, the work has been about the residential article 3.
