19:39:57 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : What do you want to better understand about Zoning Redesign? 19:44:07 From Katie Whewell, Planning : - [2] Which of the Zoning Redesign goals feel most important to you? And why? (Remember, we’re planning for the next 50 years and beyond!) 19:44:16 From Kathy Laufer To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : Maybe you should call them issues and not questions. 19:44:27 From Katie Whewell, Planning : For context, here are the 3 goals that the Zoning & Planning Committee straw-voted in: (a) Housing: A zoning code more responsive to a demand for housing that serves a range of incomes and promotes sustainable community development patterns (b) Sustainability: Environmental stewardship, fiscal strength and meeting community needs (c) Context: Preserve and protect what we like in our neighborhoods. Encourage new development to fit in the context of our neighborhoods and villages 19:44:34 From Katie Whewell, Planning : thank you kathy 19:48:33 From suzette To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : We have seen two family houses built on single family lots, and the prices of each unit are well over a million dollars. How are you envisioning that allowing two units on a single lot will be affordable? I don’t think developers are in the business of losing money. 19:51:32 From Katie Whewell, Planning To suzette(privately) : thank you suzette we will pass along 19:59:41 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : What do you hope that Zoning Redesign accomplishes? 20:00:07 From suzette To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : I have to agree with all the concerns our groups speakers have expressed. 20:02:56 From barry f To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : I think the city had the chance to serve the demand for housing that serves a range of incomes with the new developments. In the past few years. It seems that opportunity was lost and I have little faith that these changes will make the difference that is being attempted. It seems this an attempt to change existing housing which will change city to a more uraban community. 20:06:11 From Katie Whewell, Planning To barry f(privately) : thank you barry, we will pass along your comments 20:09:25 From barry f To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : I think the city had chance to serve the demand for housing that serves a range of incomes with the recent new developments. It seems that opportunity was lost and I have little faith that these changes will make the difference that is being attempted. It seems like a refitting of the city. I would like to preserve the housing stock rather than retrofitting. There are many smaller homes and I would like to see the zoning preserve those houses. 20:09:58 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : What concerns you about Zoning Redesign? 20:15:05 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : How do you want to participate with Zoning Redesign in 2021? Here are some examples of how we can engage Newton community members: - large city-wide events with break-out groups - meetings by Ward or Village - meetings by individual topics - Office hours - short info sheets and videos by topic - Steward-based program - Surveys - facilitated debates - presentations by outside community groups who have experienced zoning re-write in their cities - Social Media (Instagram, Facebook) 20:20:27 From Katie Whewell, Planning : kwhewell@newtonma.gov 20:20:54 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : jsantosuosso@newtonma.gov - Jane Santosuosso, Chief Zoning Code Official 20:21:20 From Jane Santosuosso, Planning : Katie Whewell, Senior Planner, kwhewell@newtonma.gov 20:27:42 From barry f To Katie Whewell, Planning(privately) : Direct mail and email
