House Marker 1919Newton’s historic marker program seeks to place date plaques on houses throughout our city as a way of spreading knowledge about the history of Newton’s development. Any house, no matter how recently built, is eligible for a marker.

With your house marker, you will also receive a detailed research report with information about the history of your house and its earliest residents, along with links to relevant documents.

Research will begin once payment is received in full.

How much does a historic marker cost?

Each customized marker costs

  • $250 (= $265.63 including tax) for Historic Newton members

  • $300 (= $318.75 including tax) for those who are not members of Historic Newton.

  • $150 (= $159.38 including tax) for replacement marker only

All sales are final. A portion of sales benefits the work of Historic Newton, a 501(c)3 nonprofit.

What does the historic marker look like?

Newton's historic marker is an attractive 14.5"x 9" wooden oval, accented with beveled edges, light gray in color, with dark green lettering. The all-weather markers are designed for placement on the outside of your home.

What will my house marker say?

Your marker will display the year your house was built. If the exact year cannot be determined, the marker will show a "circa" date. If research confirms the names of the original resident owners, you may opt to have your marker show their names as well. The marker also carries the name and official logo of Historic Newton. We no longer use the wording "The [Smith] House," and house markers do not display names of architects or builders.

How long does it take to research a house and produce each marker?

Due to research required and the popularity of our program, it will likely take several months after you place your order for your marker and research report to be ready. You will be notified when they are ready to be picked up at the Jackson Homestead and Museum during Museum open hours.

Where should I place my historic marker?

The marker should be installed on the outside of your home, at eye level, facing the street. If architectural features or landscaping make that impractical, markers may be mounted at higher levels, including the second floor. Care should be taken to minimize confusion with your house number.

How can I learn about the history of my house without purchasing a historic marker?
