The History Book Club of Historic Newton meets to discuss Railroaded: The Transcontinentals and the Making of Modern America by Richard White. A 2011 Pulitzer prize finalist, the book describes how the transcontinental railroads “were a Gilded Age extravagance that rent holes in the political, social and environmental fabric of the nation, creating railroads as mismanaged and corrupt as they were long”. Read the book in advance and join our discussion, which is free and open to all. To be added to the History Book Club email list, please send an email to social@historicnewton.org.
