The Newton Police Traffic Bureau is located in the Police Headquarters 1321 Washington St., West Newton, 02465, (617)-796-2106.
Hours are Monday through Friday 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. The Bureau Commander is Captain Damien Doucette.
The Newton Police Department has Child Passenger Safety Technicians available to inspect your car seat to make sure it is installed correctly. Inspections are done by appointment only. This is a FREE service that we offer to residents and non-residents!

PARKING PERMITS
If you are looking to acquire a parking permit for resident parking or overnight parking, please come to the Newton Police Headquarters (1321 Washington Street). If the address on your registration does not reflect your current Newton address, please provide additional proof of residency. Once we receive your request, we will mail the permit to you. RESIDENT PARKING PERMIT : These are issued to residents who live at eligible dwellings. Signage on the street will indicate the restriction. The fee for the permit is $25.00 per sticker, a maximum of 2 stickers per household, and 2 visitor placards. . In order to be eligible for the parking permit you are required to have proof of residence on that street, i.e. Mass driver’s license, automobile registration, lease, or utility bill.
MUNICIPAL LOT STICKERS: This sticker allows you to park your motor vehicle in a designated municipal parking lot during the all night parking ban which runs from December 1st to March 31st. A vehicle may be parked in the municipal lot. There is no charge for this permit. Proof of residency is required.
ALL NIGHT PARKING RESTRICTIONS: From December 1 through March 31st, it shall be unlawful for any vehicle, other than one acting in an emergency, to be parked on any street, way, highway, road, parkway or private way dedicated or open to the use of the public for a period of time longer than one hour between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. Violators are subject to a $ 25.00 fine. Snow Emergency Regulations: Upon the declaration of a Snow Emergency by the Chief of Police in the City of Newton, no person shall stand or park or allow, permit or suffer any vehicle registered in his name or under his control to stand or park on any of the ways or parts thereof within the city in such a manner as to impede the removal or plowing of snow or ice. Violators are subject to a $20.00 fine and the vehicle will be towed.
All stickers or permits issued under the Municipal Lot Parking Program for overnight parking in municipal parking lots shall be automatically suspended upon the declaration of a snow emergency in the City of Newton and all vehicles must be removed from the municipal parking lot. Violators are subject to a $20.00 fine and the vehicle will be towed.
TEMPORARY PARKING PERMITS
CONTRACTORS, TEMPORARY HEALTH OR CHILD CARE
A temporary parking permit may be applied for in an area where there is a parking restriction with a time limit 1 hour, 2 hour etc., a permit cannot be obtained for a street with a “no parking” restriction.
In order to receive a permit, it must be demonstrated that a contractor etc is in fact working at a residence or business on the street they are applying for the temporary permit.
The permit can be issued for one month or a maximum of three months.
The fee for the permit is $10.00 a month.
This application must be completed in person.
A registration must be presented for each vehicle that is issued a temporary permit
A placard will be issued and must be displayed on the dashboard (driver’s side)
The temporary permit does not cover other parking infractions i.e. parking on the wrong side of the road, fire hydrant etc.
BLOCK PARTIES:
There is no application fee for residents applying for Block Party permits. All neighbors affected by the closed-off area must sign the Block Party Permit form indicating that they are in favor of the street closure. This form may be downloaded from the "Forms" section of this website. Please fill the form out completely and submit it to the Police Department at least two (2) weeks prior to the scheduled event. The Newton Police Traffic Bureau investigates all serious and fatal accidents.
The officers of the Newton Police Traffic Bureau are assigned numerous Directed Patrols on a daily basis. These locations are determined by accident data, personal knowledge of the officers and concerns submitted by citizens.
SPEED LIMIT ADVISORY
Be advised in March of 2017, the City of Newton adopted a default speed limit of 25 MPH on all streets in the City that NOT POSTED OTHERWISE. If the street is not posted with a speed limit sign, the speed limit is 25 MPH. If the speed limit is posted, the posted speed is the legal speed limit. In order to reduce sigh pollution, the City is not placing 25 MPH speed limit signs on all the default roadways. Instead, the City has posted the default speed limit on informational signs on all major roadways entering the City.
The speed limit in School Zones (when children are present) remains 20 MPH
This change does not apply to the State roadways such as Route 9, Needham Street, Charlesbank Road, Forest Grove Road and Nonantum Road
MOTOR VEHICLE CITATION: If you receive a civil motor vehicle citation there are two ways to resolve the citation. One is to pay the fine and the other is to fill out the back of the citation requesting a hearing, and mailing the citation to the Registry of Motor Vehicles in the envelope provided. This has to be done in 20 days. If you receive a criminal complaint and you want to request a hearing the citation has to be brought to the Newton District Court, 1309 Washington St. West Newton, Ma. 02465, within 4 days.
PARKING TICKET: If you receive a parking ticket, there are two ways to resolve the ticket. One is to pay the fine. The other is to appeal the ticket in writing within 21 days of receipt of ticket, Go to the City website www.newtonma.gov. Select Newton 311 tab, select Parking tab then select Parking Ticket Appeal.
