Mission Statement
Human Resources Department Mission: To provide respectful and caring Human Resource services and solutions with supporting policies and procedures to enhance the fair recruitment, retention, training and development of our most valuable resource, the employees of the City and provide them with a safe and positive workplace with fair compensation.
Equal Opportunity Employment Statement
The City of Newton has a long standing record of nondiscrimination in employment and providing equal opportunity without regard to race, color, sex, religion, creed, national origin, ancestry, sexual orientation, disability, or age. The City is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer. We place high value on diversity and on ensuring that City employees are representative of the multi-cultural community we serve.
HR Business Partners
The City of Newton Human Resources Department operates with a strategic HR Business Partner model for human resources services to our departments and community.
We currently have two HR Business Partners on staff (HRBPs, one serves as the Senior HRBP and supervises the Department Support Division of HR). An HRBP is a senior HR professional who has a comprehensive understanding and expertise in how the HR function makes a line of business within the City successful. HRBPs work closely with our HR Director, Deputy HR Director and Senior HR Generalist on citywide personnel initiatives such as training, business continuity, personnel policy and compliance, and labor relations, but most importantly our HRBPs serve as the senior individual contributor who supports and collaborates with the leadership and staff of each Department.
Job responsibilities typically include coaching department leadership about HR issues such as strategic planning, developing supportive HR and organizational strategies, analyzing talent requirements, recruiting and onboarding, addressing employee relations issues and being a direct point of contact for all employees within their departments. HRBPs manage the matter before them or triage the personnel need and coordinate other HR support staff where needed. Our HRBPs have a strong general business knowledge and specific experience within their assigned department, that allows them to use HR capabilities to support the City’s organizational and operational goals.
Within our department we also have two HR generalists who support each division of the HR Department, and specialized staff who address functions such as employee safety, workplace injuries, leaves of absences, accommodations and employee benefit administration.
Please see the methods available for communicating with the HR team on the right panel of the website. You may also contact us via our general inbox by emailing HR@newtonma.gov.
Thank you.
