Youth Risk Behavior Survey

Newton Public Schools, in partnership with the Newton Department of Health and Human Services, administers the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) with students in grades 6 through 12. The YRBS is largely based on the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System which monitors six categories of health-related behaviors including mental health, sexual behaviors, alcohol and drug use, tobacco use, dietary behaviors, and physical activity.

The YRBS data and trend information is utilized by community and school district leadership and local agencies to develop and implement policies and programming that support Newton’s young people. We recognize that this survey is not representative of all young people in Newton, and we believe Newton youth who do not attend NPS will also benefit from programming and initiatives that address the YRBS findings.

The Newton Youth Services Division uses YRBS data to drive the work we do and the services we provide to Newton’s young people.
