What is Narcan?

Narcan is a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that can temporarily reverse and block the effects of opioids. Administering Narcan, along with rescue breaths and medical attention, is a safe and effective intervention to prevent an opioid overdose.

Free Narcan Program

The City of Newton Health & Human Services Department is providing free Narcan Nasal Spray and prevention resources to Newton residents. To access this program, call 617-796-1420 to make an appointment with the Social Services Division (Monday – Friday 8:30am-5:00pm).

During the appointment, you will receive brief instructions (5-10 minutes) on how to recognize an opioid overdose, and when and how to use Narcan. Additional information is available about substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery, including support for family and friends.

Naloxbox Pilot

The City of Newton Health & Human Services Department and the Newton Coalition for Community Wellness are piloting a program to install opioid overdose rescue kits in City buildings including Newton City Hall and the Newton Free Library. You can find Naloxboxes in most of the library bathrooms and at City Hall next to the AEDs and outside the Mayor's office.
