Marathon Bib Allocation
What are the criteria for being eligible for a City of Newton Mayor’s Office Boston Marathon bib?
- Either the runner or the charity must be connected to Newton: the runner is a Newton resident; or the charity is located in Newton (beyond a mailing address) and heavily serves Newton residents — (if the charity selects a runner, we ask that they prioritize Newton residents, but they may select a non-Newton runner)
- Per the BAA guidelines, the runner must fundraise on behalf of a 501(c)3 charity with a goal of raising a minimum $5,000. If the goal is not met, the runner and 501(c)3 charity may not receive a bib in future years.
- The runner or charity is responsible for the Boston Athletic Association entry fee.
- The bib, once allocated, cannot be offered for sale, auction, and/or given away as an award.
- Per the BAA guidelines, the bib cannot be transferred once distributed to a runner or charity (even in the case of injury).

The City of Newton has received 45 bibs. The Mayor allocates 10 bibs each to Newton Fire and Newton Police. The remaining 25 bibs are then distributed through the Mayor’s office.
How does an athlete or charity request a bib from the Mayor’s office, the Fire Department or the Police Department?
An athlete or charity interested in requesting a bib from the Mayor’s office can send an email of interest to the Resident Assistance Officer, Amalia Timbers, at atimbers@newtonma.gov.

A runner interested in requesting a bib from the Newton Police Department to run on behalf of the Newton Police Memorial Association can send an email of interest to Officer Juan Garcia at jgarcia@newtonma.gov.
What is the due date for a request for a bib?
The requests must be received, via email, by November 1, preceding the next Boston Marathon.
What date will the allocation of bibs be announced?
The bibs are allocated during the fall, usually no later than November 30.
How does the Mayor make the decision on who gets the bibs?
All 501(c)3 charity entries are put into a lottery and names are drawn from a hat. Once the 501(c)3 charities are chosen those who need runners are identified. Entries for runners are then put into a hat and names are pulled and matched with charities.
There is no guarantee that charities or runners will be allocated a bib in a subsequent year.
