LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICTS

The City of Newton has four Local Historic Districts authorized under Chapter 40© of the Massachusetts General Laws.  Each one has its own separate commission, and information on all four of them can be found HERE.  The City also has 235 historic districts and individual properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.  The National Register of Historic Places is a largely honorary designation of historical significance made by each state for properties deemed to have national historical significance under one or more categories.  This link will help answer specific questions about the national program: https://www.nps.gov/subjects/nationalregister/index.htm.  The 235 named districts and individual properties in Newton appear on the spreadsheet below.  This spreadsheet was extracted from the annual report of National Register-listed properties located statewide entitled State Register of Historic Places, published once every year by the Massachusetts Historical Commission.  Information about historic properties located in National Register historic districts can also be found online by town and address on MACRIS: http://mhc-macris.net/, and by address on the City of Newton webpage: http://gis.newtonma.gov/browser.html.  Feel free to contact staff in the Planning and Development Department with any questions regarding the management and protection of Newton’s historic resources: (617) 796-1120.
