City HallSummary   

Newton's Housing and Community Development division of the Planning Department annually receives approximately $3 million dollars in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) funding. About 65% of the CDBG funds is put towards to development, preservation, and rehabilitation of affordable housing in the City of Newton. The City receives approximately $130,000 annually in HOME funding, all of which supports affordable housing projects in Newton.

Ongoing Housing Development Projects

West Newton Armory

Following the City's acquisition of the West Newton Armory for $1 and a competitive RFP process, the City selected Metro West Collaborative Development and Civico Development team to redevelop the Armory into 43 units of deeply affordable housing, restricted at or below 65% AMI. West Newton Family Navigation Center

FamilyAid had over 100 years of history in providing education, training, and a wide array of social services, as well as temporary and permanent housing placements, to new immigrants and Massachusetts citizens alike. After receiving their Administrative Site Plan approval from the City in 2023, FamilyAid will move forward with the creation of the West Newton Family Navigation Center, which will create 42 units of transitional housing for single parents and their children at the site of the former Chetwynde Nursing Home. Families will receive education, job training, and a variety of other social services while they reside at the Navigation Center. FamilyAid staff will also help their residents find permanent housing solutions during their stay. Please click here to learn more about this project.
