The following major projects are currently underway, either in design or construction.
The City is adding traffic calming and bike lanes on Albemarle Road and Brookside Avenue from the Charles River to Washington Street. The project will slow vehicle speeds, improve safety and enhance accessibility. This is a short-term, non-construction project. The project includes paint, flexposts and temporary rubber speed cushions to calm traffic. Status: Approved, installation has begun in November 2023 and will be completed in Summer 2024. MassDOT project to upgrade intersection of Auburn Street at Commonwealth Avenue into a mixed lane modern roundabout. Goal is to increase safety, improve multimodal accommodations and connectivity, create new open space and support MassDOT's rehabilitation of the bridge over the Charles River, Project 110980. Status: anticipated construction 2026.
Newton is exploring a project to restore the Christina Street bridge as part of a shared use path connecting Needham Street with the Town of Needham. Study completion: 6/30/21. More information will be available in December 2023.
Project will use paint and signage at intersections to allow for two way bike travel on the Carriageway. The project makes no changes to vehicle direction of travel and has no parking removal. Project was well received at two public meetings on 10/19/20 and 114/21. The City has incorporated comments and finalizing Council approval before installation. Status: complete.
Fully funded project to redesign the Carriageway from Lyons Field to the Marriott to increase open space, improve sidewalks, create a two way bike path, enhance crossings and reduce pavement. Status: under construction.
DCR initiated and managed project to redesign parkway as a "complete street". Project narrows the roadway to two travel lanes to create space for a safe bicycle and pedestrian shared use path on the west side, and a sidewalk on the east side. Existing travel lanes are maintained at Beacon Street and The Shoppes at Chestnut Hill Driveway. Status: under construction.
Study to explore the feasibility of connecting Newton and Needham via a shared-use path extending the Upper Falls Greenway. Status: study complete. See NewtonMA.gov/CommunityWay.

Needham Street
MassDOT led and funded project to pave and improve Needham Street. Project upgrades to traffic signal equipment, improves roadway alignment geometry, improves multimodal safety with projected bike lanes and crossings, and implements signal coordination. Status: Under construction.
MBTA led and funded project to make Newton's 3 commuter rail stations more accessible and to redesign them to promote better service. Status: in design.
MassDOT led project to address traffic backups and safety issues at the I-90/Newton Corner interchange. Aiming to improve safety and experience for users of all transportation modes traveling through the area. Status: in design.

Newton Highlands Green Line Accessibility Improvements
MBTA led and funded project to enhance accessibility to the existing Newton Highlands T station on the Green Line D Branch. Status: Construction anticipated to begin in 2024.
City initiative to paint formal bike lanes on Parker from Dedham Street to Cypress Street, continuing on Cypress Street and Centre Street to Beacon Street. Status: Complete

Pettee Square/Chestnut - Oak Village Enhancement
Village enhancement project for Pettee Square to improve safety and pedestrian accommodations, enhance streetscape, upgrade traffic signal, and improve pedestrian lighting in advance of potential future construction at Northland. Status: under construction.

Village enhancement project to improve safety and pedestrian accommodations, upgrade traffic signal equipment, enhance streetscape, and improve multimodal safety and operations. Status: Complete. -
Washington Street Pilot
Newton is planning improvements to Washington Street between Chestnut Street in West Newton and Lowell Avenue in Newtonville to create a more attractive, friendly and welcoming environment for all who use this stretch of roadway, including improved pedestrian and cyclist infrastructure for increased safety.
