Bicycle/Pedestrian Network Plan: The Newton Bike/Ped Network Plan is an implementation-focused project to create an actionable blueprint for safe, enjoyable and equitable cycling and walking throughout Newton. The City has engaged Kittelson & Associates to work with the Planning team and a Network Plan Advisory Committee to produce the plan by early 2024.
Street Design Guide: The Street Design Guide is a living document, guiding City engineers and consultants work as they redesign streets.
Complete Streets Policy & Working Group: Adopted in July, 2016, the Newton Complete Streets Policy directs City Staff to consistently incorporate complete streets vision, principles and values into all planning and decisions related to Newton’s roadways. The City undertakes this policy with the goal of promoting transportation options, so as to: reduce automobile congestion, improve the environment, increase public safety, encourage active lifestyles, and promote livability and vitality of the City. Under Mayor Fuller, in 2018, the City established an interdepartmental Complete Streets Working Group, chaired by Planning and comprised of DPW, Health and Human Services, ADA Coordinator, Sustainability, Parks & Rec, Mayor’s Office, Police, Fire, Schools and one public representative to review all roadway projects and processes on an ongoing basis. Newton Leads 2040 Transportation Strategy, 2017: Completed in 2017, the Newton Leads 2040 Transportation Strategy provides a comprehensive data-driven analysis of travel conditions in Newton as well as a set of recommendations for investing limited transportation resources to achieve an equitable and safe multimodal transportation system that creates economic growth and provides environmental benefits. The Strategy aims to make Newton’s transportation system safe, smart, accessible, livable, and sustainable by 2040. View the Strategy.
Newton Centre Parking Strategy, 2017: Completed in 2017 the Newton Center Parking Strategy is a comprehensive study of parking supply, utilization, and management in Newton Centre. The strategy documents current parking activities, identifies needs and opportunities, and recommends a series of strategies to achieve goals for the village center. The Strategy analyzes parking patterns through the collection of on-the-ground parking data and field observations, as well as input from public workshops, stakeholder meetings, and an online survey. The Strategy recommends an active and adaptive management program of smart parking options that includes a mix of demand-responsive pricing, new technologies, more efficient designs, and context-sensitive regulations. The strategies include innovative and cost-effective programs and policies for the short and the long-term that can be piloted and tested soon. View the report.
