This project intends to enhance the safety for all users, beautify Newtonville Village, and improve the functionality of Walnut Street for all users. Improvements include wider sidewalks, traffic calming bump-outs, 78 new trees, sidewalk furniture, new streetlights, updated traffic signals, narrower roadways, a simplified intersection at Walnut Street/Austin Street/and Newtonville Avenue
Project area: Walnut Street, from Newtonville Avenue to Elm Street and Austin Street from Walnut Street to Lowell Avenue.
Construction hours are from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (additional hours if needed)
Please note the below schedule is subject to change. COVID-19 has created delays in our supply chain for materials, such as pavers, traffic lights, and street furnishings.
Parking Impacts
Parking restrictions will only be in place in the immediate area of where the contractor is working. The Department of Public Works will work with businesses during the holiday season to ensure proper pedestrian access and to minimize any impacts to parking in Newtonville Village.

Austin Street, Bram Way Madison Avenue and Walnut Street
Schedule (January – March/April 2021)
Work will continue throughout the winter months as weather permits.
- The contractor will continue to install pavers and streetlight fixtures.
- Benches will be installed
- Traffic signal at Walnut Street and Cabot Street will be installed providing upgraded traffic signals
- Signage will be installed
- Final mill and pave and all pavement markings will be done in the Spring bringing the project to completion.
Schedule (October – December 2020)
- October 19 to October 23 – Paver and light foundation installations begin.
- October 26 to end of construction season – The contractor will continue to install pavers and streetlight fixtures. All required pavement markings will be painted.
- Construction work will pause for winter weather and resume in the Spring of 2021.
January 4 - January 8, 2021
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Installation of concrete pavers along Walnut Street neat the Senior Center
- Precast concrete bases will be installed in preparation of street furniture
- Street light foundations will be installed
December 14 - December 18
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Installation of concrete pavers along Walnut Street
- Precast concrete bases will be installed in preparation of street furniture
- Street light foundations will be installed
- Removal of existing thermal pavement markings at Cabot and Walnut Streets and new crosswalk will be painted.
December 7 - December 11
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Installation of concrete pavers along Walnut Street
- Precast concrete bases will be installed in preparation of street furniture
- Street light foundations will be installed
- Removal of existing thermal pavement markings at Cabot and Walnut Streets and new crosswalk will be painted.
November 30 - December 4
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Continue prepping the sidewalk area prior to the installation of concrete pavers
- Remove excessive crushed stone
- Install all precast concrete bases for street furniture
November 23 - November 27
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Install pavers from Washington Park to Madison Avenue
- Concrete pour to complete sidewalk at Walnut Street and Austin Street
- Install additional light foundations
- Prepare area for pavers, Madison Avenue to Newtonville Avenue
November 16 - November 20
The upcoming schedule is shortened by the Thanksgiving Day Holiday
- Pour concrete for street lighting control cabinet
- Install light foundations
- Prepare tree pits for pavers
- Install additional light foundations
- Prepare tree pits for pavers
November 9 - November 13
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter
- Finish asphalt in parking areas and add top course of driveways
- Paint parking stalls and fog line
- Excavate, form and grade for concrete pour at bus stop, Starbucks and Star Market driveway
- Excavate excess stone and install concrete slabs for benches.
November 2 - November 6
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Installing concrete pads for street furniture
- Install 3 catch basins on Walnut Street
- Pour concrete panels at Starbuck bump out
- Installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter
October 26 - October 30
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Concrete pour at the Starbucks bump out and bus stop at Austin and Walnut Streets
- Complete structure work at Walnut and Austin Streets
- Installing concrete pads for street furniture
- Installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter
October 19 - October 23
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Continued work on the bus shelter area at Walnut Street and Austin Street. This work includes; plantings, curbing and sidewalk installation.
- Plantings along the north side of Austin Street
- Installing concrete pads for street furniture
October 12 - October 16
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Continue the installation of curbing at the traffic island, Walnut Street and Newtonville Ave
- Install curbing at the bump out at Bram Way and Austin Street
- Continued tree planting
October 5 - October 9
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Concrete placement at the NE corner of Newtonville Ave ADA ramp
- Final driveway apron concrete pour on Phillip Bram Way
- Utility structures adjustments on Austin Street
- Planting additional trees on Walnut Street
September 28 - October 2
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Fine grading Austin Street
- Paving Austin Street
September 11 - September 18
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Setting granite curb on Bram Way adjacent to private parking lot behind 313 Walnut Street, Highland Ave adjacent to the Senior Center, bump out near Highland Ave @ Bram Way and Starbucks bump out near Austin Street and Bram Way
- Fine grading, forming and prepping for concrete on Bram Way and Austin Street at Walnut Street bump out
- Concrete placement for above locations
- Concrete placement of sidewalk poetry at Starbucks bump out near Austin Street and Bram Way
August 31 - September 4
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Form and prep sidewalks for concrete placement between Lowell Avenue and Rockland Trust Bank
- Form and prepare Austin Street at Walnut Street bump out for concrete up towards limits at bridge abutment
- Concrete placement for above locations
- Begin constructing bump out near Philip Bram Way @ Austin Street near Starbucks
August 24 -August 28
Work in the upcoming week includes:
- Excavation and fine grading of proposed concrete sidewalks on south side of Austin
- Install five new tree pits
- Concrete placement for prepared sidewalk on south side of Austin Street.
