UPDATE: February 2024
We have now launched an expansion of the no-cost organics drop-off program to three new locations. The expansion is a pilot program featuring three new, more accessible organics drop-off sites. All the collected compostable materials will be picked up by Black Earth Compost. Click here to view the list of accepted materials. Black Earth will process these materials to make finished compost.
NEW ORGANICS DROP-OFF BIN LOCATIONS
- Albemarle Road, north bound, just past the baseball diamond
- War Memorial Circle, Newton City Hall, by the bike rack
- Wheeler Road, directly across from Oak Hill Middle School (130 Wheeler Rd) next to two Helpsy bins
To prevent our organics bins from being used as trash cans, they are kept locked. Anyone seeking to drop-off organics will need to complete a brief registration form one time to get the lock combination. The new bins are available all-year long and 24-hours a day.
HOW TO USE THE BINS
- Click here or use the QR code below to register.
- Then follow the instructions on the image below (the same sticker is on the bins).
- Organics must be contained in a certified compostable or paper bag. Loose material and non-certified compostable bags are not accepted to keep our bins clean.
- There is no fee to participate in the program.

November 2020
Newton launched a no-cost organics drop-off program at Newton's Resource Recovery Center.
Residents can drop-off all food waste including fruit and vegetable peels, meat/bones, seafood shells, and other kitchen scraps along with paper towels and paper napkins. Food scraps are composted by Black Earth to become a soil amendment. Refer to their
guidelines for acceptable materials.
As a reminder, please do not put any metal, glass, plastic, rubber, or cartons/juice boxes in the carts. Make sure you remove any stickers from fruits and vegetables before composting.
To drop off your household organics:
- Use a paper bag or a certified compostable bag to contain your organics during transport. Certified compostable bags can be found at WholeFoods, Target, and online retailers.
- Place the paper bag or certified compostable bag into one of the organics carts - these are located near the back of the residential drop off area.
PRO TIP #1: If using a certified compostable bag, store organics inside the compostable bag in your freezer. This will prevent odor issues.
PRO TIP #2: If using a paper bag, store it in a plastic shopping bag to create a moisture barrier. This double bag can be kept in the freezer until it is full and you are able to drop it off. Remove the plastic shopping bag before placing into the organics collection carts.
