WN_RenderingOfPlaza.jpgConstruction includes removing existing sidewalk, removing and resetting curbing, installing conduit, installing wider sidewalk,  ADA ramps, bicycle lanes including a raised protected lane and installing special soil. (weather permitting).  Construction hours are from 7:00 am – 3:30 pm (additional hours if needed).

•Enhance Pedestrian Experience, the Village Character, and the Business Climate

Parking Impacts

Parking restrictions will only be in place in the immediate area of where the contractor is working.  The Department of Public Works will work with businesses during the holiday season to ensure proper pedestrian access and to minimize any impacts to parking in West Newton Village.

  • Paving - July 19th and July 20th 8pm - 5am  

(subject to change due to weather)

Weekly Construction Updates

Schedule (July 2021)

  • Signage installation continues
  • Permanent pavement markings will be installed post final paving 
  • Traffic signals will be monitored, adjusted and fine tuned. (This is standard practice with any new traffic signal project).

Schedule (March/April/May 2021)

  • Install pavers and benches in the plaza at the intersection of Watertown and Washington Streets in the last two weeks of March through the week of April 24
  • Install remaining bollards the week of April 10
  • Start preparation for precast pavers the week of April 17 through the week of May 1
  • Installation of precast pavers the week of April 17 through the week of May 8
  • Repair work starts the week of May 8
  • Final mill and pave begins the week of May 15 and is completed the week of May 29
  • Permanent pavement markings added the week of May 29

January 4 - January 8

  • Mast arm installations along Washington Street were completed
  • Street lights were powered
  • Pedestrian push buttons were installed

December 14 - December 18

  • Additional signal equipment installation along Washington Street
  • Street light inspection

December 7 -December 11

  • Additional signal equipment installation along Washington Street

November 23 - November 27

 The upcoming week is shortened by the Thanksgiving Day holiday

  • Continued clean up of the area in preparation for winter 
  • Railings for the plaza will be installed
  • Memorial plaque will be installed

November 16 - November 20 

In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Finish installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter
  • Installation of streetlight foundations and streetlights

November 2 - November 6

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Continue the installation of mast arm foundations
  • Install tree pit pavers 
  • Pour the final driveway apron at Tody's 
  • Installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter

October 19 - October 23

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Continued tree planting
  • Install pavers
  • Excavate the second driveway apron at Tody's
  • Install the bump out elevated bike lane in front of Tody's
  • Installing asphalt at the curb line in front of businesses to allow for 6" reveal in preparation of the winter

October 12 - October 16

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Excavate the sidewalk and  first apron ( closest to the bridge) at Tody's
  • Install the street light foundation, hand hole and conduit at the first ADA ramp
  • Install and ADA ramp curbing 
  • Grade and form ADA ramp
  • Pour cement for ADA Ramp

October 5 - October 9

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Grade and form sidewalk near Tody's
  • Pour concrete sidewalk
  • Install final catch basin in front of Tody's
  • Excavate the first driveway apron (near the bridge - Tody's)
  • Install curbing and ADA ramp

September 28- October 2

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Pour sidewalk and ADA ramps at the plaza
  • Excavating sidewalks and curb along commuter parking lot
  • Install conduit, hand holes and street light foundations ang commuter parking lot
  • Excavating and installing curb and ADA ramps along commuter lot

September 21-September 25

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Full depth excavation on Washington Street, from the bridge to Tody's
  • Line striping subcontractor will stripe the section of Washington Street before the bridge
  • Three additional bollards will installed near Sweet Tomatoes

September 14 -September 18

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Construction of the final tree pit for the plaza and finish the concrete sidewalk
  • Rerouting conduit for the fire box located at the corner of Chestnut Street
  • Begin laying conduit for traffic signals
  • Permanent markings in preparation of full depth excavation of the Elm Street intersection 
  • Full depth excavation on the Elm Street intersection for the next two weeks

August 31 -September 4

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Construction of the planter box in front of Sweet Tomatoes
  • Pour the proposed control cabinet foundation
  • Begin laying conduit for traffic signals
  • Begin setting hand holes and light base foundations at new island near Washington Street at Watertown Street
  • Some concrete placement near Sweet Tomatoes and new island at Watertown Street

August 24 - August 28

The contractor, A.R. Belli is currently working at the corner of Washington and Watertown  Streets .  In the upcoming week the following work is scheduled to take place

  • Installation of conduit and hand holes in front of Sweet Tomatoes
  • Removing and resetting the nine bollards in front of Sweet Tomatoes
  • Installation of special soil in the plaza as well as along Washington Street
  • Setting curb for the tree pits in the plaza and in front of Sweet Tomatoes
