The Fair Housing Act, a federal law enacted on April 11, 1968, prohibits discrimination in the purchase, sale, rental, or financing of housing—private or public—based on race, skin color, sex, nationality, religion, disability, and family status. And on January 20, 2021, on the day he was sworn into office, President Biden signed an executive order further extending protections by prohibiting discrimination in housing because of gender identity or sexual orientation.

For the month of April, the WestMetro HOME Consortium (WMHC) invites you to celebrate Fair Housing Month to increase efforts to end housing discrimination and raise awareness of fair housing rights. Housing has generational ripples, as severe as the fact that one’s life expectancy depends upon the zip code they live in and can differ by 30 years over a couple miles. At the same time, community members have powerfully pushed for housing justice or depended upon community relationships to secure their needs and joy.

We encourage you to explore this website and think outside of the box when considering how to achieve housing justice - both in addressing historic and current inequities, exacerbated by the pandemic, as well as in its illumination of community resiliency and the need to follow the leadership of those most impacted.
