The Commonwealth Avenue Carriageway - 2 Way Bike Travel Project added paint and signage at intersections to allow for two way bike travel on the Carriageway. The project made no changes to vehicle direction of travel and had no parking removal. The project was well received at two public meeting on 10/19/20 and 11/4/21.  

Newton DPW, Planning, and its consultant Environmental Partners Group put together the final design for signage & pavement marking plans for implementing near-term, low-cost improvements for bicycles along Commonwealth Avenue’s carriageway. The city’s intent was to increase safety and awareness for all modes of transportation while formalizing bicycles’ legality to travel east despite Carriage Way’s One-Way westbound regulation for vehicles. The project has now been completed.
