1. Each request is reviewed for specific concerns.
2. A radar traffic recorder is set up on-site for 48 hours to collect vehicle speed and traffic volume data.  The police crash reports are reviewed for the previous five years for the roadway segment.
3. The traffic data is input into an evaluation spreadsheet.  The evaluation factors the location's proximity to high pedestrian generators such as schools, village centers, transit stops, and parks.  The number of crashes over the previous 5-year period are incorporated into Massachusetts Department of Transportation's (MassDOT) roadway segment crash worksheet for comparison to the average MassDOT District 6 crash rate per roadway classification.
4. The requests are ranked based on the above criteria.  Streets with a history of crashes, high travel speeds above the speed limit, high pedestrian traffic areas, and a crash rate exceeding the average crash rate generally rank higher in our prioritization.
5. The Department of Public Works will focus on implementing traffic calming improvements on the streets which ranked highest.  

The prioritization and proposed traffic calming actions are discussed and reviewed with the City's Complete Streets Working Group (CSWG).

There is a wide range of potential traffic calming actions, depending on the specific circumstances of each roadway.  Some of the traffic calming techniques include:

• Increased enforcement
• Static and/or dynamic signage (i.e. speed feedback displays)
• Pedestrian Actuated Devices (i.e. rectangular rapid flash beacons)
• New or improved pavement markings
• Improvements to roadway geometry either through permanent changes to curbs, or using more tactile techniques such as paint, textured surfaces, flexible posts, etc.
