Age Friendly Planning: Planning for a Livable and All-Age Friendly Newton (PLAAN)

The City of Newton’s older adult population is the fastest growing group of residents. By 2030, the 2010 Census projects that 1 out of every 3 Newtonites will be age 60 or older. This trend poses a great challenge and opportunity for the community. The Department of Older Adult Services and the Newton Council on Aging has been leading a comprehensive community process to ensure that as people age and their abilities change they have easy access to services, amenities, and opportunities.

  • In 2014, the John W. McCormack Graduate School of Policy & Global Students at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, conducted a study to investigate the needs, interests, preferences and options of City’s older population, with respect to living and aging in Newton, Living and Aging in Newton: Now and In the Future details the findings.
  • In 2016, Newton was designated to be part of the World Health Organization and AARP Livable Communities Age-Friendly network.
  • In 2017, using the AARP guidelines, PLAAN (Planning for a Livable All-Age Friendly Newton) involved over 300 residents in listening sessions to set goals to implement improvements in 10 focus areas, or domains. As part of the effort, Newton received a special grant from the AARP and implemented a program called So You Want to Stay in Your Home and created a “How To” age-friendly home environment evaluation/ implementation guide.
