The Needham Street area is a key gateway to the City of Newton. The area has been and is currently the subject of private development efforts. While many efforts have occurred over the years to study and plan for this area, this work has not coalesced into a broadly shared single vision and strategy as a whole. A clear vision for the area will assist the City in evaluating future plans for the area. Therefore, the City of Newton, led by the Planning and Development Department, engaged the broader community in 2017/2018 in informing the development of a vision plan for the Needham Street Area to be adopted into the City’s Comprehensive Plan.
The City Council voted (20-1) to adopt the Needham Street Area Vision Plan on August 13, 2018.
Over Winter 2017- Spring 2018 the Community Engagement Group helped design, facilitate, and synthesize input from public meetings in order to help maximize participation and involvement in the planning process. Representatives from the group actively sought input from and expressed the views of their constituency as well as their personal views in order to help inform the vision for the future of Needham Street. For a description of the Community Engagement Group's Goals, Rules and Responsibilities please refer to the Charter and Operating Protocols.
