Under the state Community Preservation Act (CPA), funds are granted for each project through two steps:
- An all-volunteer Community Preservation Committee (CPC), whose membership is specified by state statute and local ordinance, recommends an amount of funding, a funding method (direct or debt-financed), and funding categories (one or more of the CPA-eligible resources and activities).
- The local legislature appropriates up to the amount recommended by the CPC. Newton's local legislature is its City Council.
The CPC may not appropriate funds directly, but the legislature may not appropriate CPA funds without a CPC recommendation. Click on the links below to learn more about Newton's CPC:
