Jackson Homestead Basement Rehabilitation

Goals:

To stabilize and rehabilitate the basement of the Jackson Homestead by addressing current water infiltration and humidity issues in order to stabilize and protect the structure and provide a suitable gallery space that preserves the collection and artifacts according to contemporary museum standards. The Phase I funding request will hire a consultant to develop a plan and design options for achieving these goals.

Funding Process:

March 25, 2022 - Pre-Proposal Application submitted for CPC Review. The Application includes a summary of the proposed work, photographs of existing conditions, and a summary of the building's historical significance.

April 12, 2022 - Pre-Proposal review at CPC meeting. The CPC unanimously votes to invite the applicant to submit a full proposal.

June 24, 2022 - Full Proposal submitted for Phase I of the work needed to complete the basement rehabilitation project.  Additional information submitted with the proposal application include:

• A letter explaining the revised scope and goals of the project
• A draft scope of work for the project consultant

July 12, 2022 - Following the Project Presentation, the CPC unanimously voted to recommend full funding of the project.  The funding recommendation will be sent to the City Council for review and approval.

August 22, 2022 - CPA Funding Recommendation docketed with City Council for their review and approval.

September 19, 2022 - Letter from Public Buildings Commissioner Josh Morse providing more detailed information on the anticipated project

October 3, 2022 - City Council approves full funding of the project.

Jackson Homestead Fence Replacement

Goals:

Replace approximately 200-210 feet of badly damaged and decaying cedar picket fencing along the Jackson Road property line including two 4' x 4' walk gates and one 12' double gate for vehicles. The CPA funds would cover the cost of removal and disposal of old materials as well as the installation of a new fence.

November 10, 2020 - CPC recommends funding of project, subject to submission of revised quote (More accurate design of fence pickets, additional protective sheaths on fence post)

December 21, 2020 - CPC Chair approves Revised Quote, Option #2 for new custom wood fence to replicate ca. 1940s era fencing along Jackson Road.

January 25, 2021 - Project presentation made to Finance Committee, which votes unanimously to recommend it for funding to the full Council. 

February 1, 2021 - City Council Order approves funding recommendation for project as proposed.

Goals

Protect the Jackson Homestead/Newton History Museum's collections, historic building and visitors by expanding and upgrading spaces for the storage and use of two-dimensional collections (printed materials, manuscripts and photographs), while also providing handicap accessibility and fire suppression systems that meet current standards.

Goals

  • In response to the City's request, the CPC did not forward a funding recommendation for this project to the Board of Aldermen. A revised proposal for this project may be submitted to the CPC when this project has been assigned a high current priority through the City's Capital Improvement Plan.

Goals

Replace leaking roof; restore and rehabilitate rotted wooden exterior elements, then repaint (in a historically documented color) the 1809 house and stable wing that house the Newton History Museum, in time for the house's 200th anniversary in 2009.
